Mood tracker app: a free one you talk to
VitaMood is a free mood tracker app for iPhone and Android. Each evening you talk for up to a minute about your day. Your phone turns the recording into text, and the app suggests a mood score from 1 to 10, tags and a one-line summary. The free plan includes voice check-ins, transcription on your phone and your full history, with 5 AI summaries a week.
Updated
This page explains what a mood tracker app does, what VitaMood gives you for free and what needs VitaMood Pro, and how four other well-known mood trackers compare: Daylio, How We Feel, Bearable and the mood logging built into Apple Health. Every detail about another app was checked on 10 October 2026 against that app's own website, help pages, privacy policy or store listing. Where no source settled a point, the table says "Not stated".
The short answer
- You want to say how your day went instead of tapping it in: VitaMood. You talk, your phone writes it down, and you get a mood score, tags and a summary.
- You want the fastest possible entry with no account: Daylio. You tap a mood and the activities of your day.
- You want to name the exact emotion you feel: How We Feel, a free app with no in-app purchases.
- You want to track symptoms and many other factors next to mood: Bearable.
- You use an iPhone and want nothing extra to install: the State of Mind log in Apple's Health app.
What an app for tracking mood does
A mood tracker app keeps a record of how you felt, one entry at a time, so you can look back over weeks and months instead of relying on memory. Memory is a poor record of mood. A hard Thursday can colour the whole week when you think back on it, and a good weekend can hide three flat days before it. A written record, made on the day, shows what actually happened.
Mood trackers differ mainly in three ways:
- How you make an entry. Most apps ask you to tap a face, pick a word or move a slider. Some let you add a note. VitaMood asks you to talk.
- What sits next to the mood. Some apps store mood on its own. Others let you add activities, symptoms, or data from Apple Health or Health Connect, so you can see your mood beside your sleep or your steps.
- Where your entries are kept. Some apps keep everything on your phone. Others store entries on their servers so you can sign in on another device.
None of these is better in every case. A tap-based tracker is quicker on a busy day. A spoken entry carries more of what happened. The right app is the one you will still open on day 30.
VitaMood: the mood app you talk to
VitaMood is built around a 60-second voice check-in. In the evening the app asks "How was today?". You answer out loud, for up to a minute, in any of 26 languages. You do not need to plan what to say. Most people talk about their work, the people they saw, how they slept and how their body feels.
Your phone turns the recording into text. The audio never leaves the phone: VitaMood uses the phone's own speech recogniser, and for a language the phone cannot transcribe, it offers to download a speech model so the transcription can still run on the phone. Nothing downloads without your consent.
The app then sends the text, not the audio, to write a summary. You get back:
- a mood score from 1 (very low) to 10 (very good), which you can change,
- a one-line summary of what you said, in the language you spoke,
- up to four tags from a fixed set of ten: work, family, friends, relationship, training, sleep, stress, health, food and rest,
- an energy level of low, medium or high, but only when you talked about your energy, tiredness or alertness. It is never guessed from your mood.
Every day gets one of five mood bands: Great (9 to 10), Good (7 to 8), Okay (5 to 6), Heavy (3 to 4) and Low (1 to 2). The History screen shows your check-ins in a calendar coloured by mood.
What the free plan includes
- Voice check-ins of up to a minute, as many as you like
- Transcription on your phone
- Your full history of check-ins, by day
- 5 AI summaries a week, each with a mood score, tags and a one-line summary
- No ads
The weekly count resets every Monday at 00:00 UTC. When you have used all 5, your check-ins are still recorded, transcribed and kept on your phone. The app tells you when the next summary is available.
What needs VitaMood Pro
- 5 AI summaries a day instead of 5 a week
- Health insights: your mood next to your sleep, HRV (heart rate variability), resting heart rate, steps, workouts, active energy and respiratory rate from Apple Health or Health Connect, plus mindful minutes and time in daylight from Apple Health
- Daily targets you set for sleep, steps, workouts, mindful minutes, time in daylight and active energy
- A weekly report
VitaMood Pro is a monthly or annual subscription. New subscribers get a 7-day free trial on both plans. The app and the store show the price before you subscribe. Free users are never asked for access to their health data.

Which mood tracker app to choose
Start with the way you would rather record a day. If typing or tapping feels like a chore by the end of the evening, a spoken check-in is easier to keep up. If you want a record in five seconds, a tap-based tracker is quicker.
Then decide what you want next to your mood. If you have a smartwatch, your phone already holds your sleep, heart rate and activity. VitaMood Pro, Daylio, How We Feel, Bearable and Apple Health can all use some of that data. VitaMood Pro reads nine of them: sleep, HRV, resting heart rate, steps, workouts, active energy, respiratory rate, mindful minutes and time in daylight.
Last, check the languages. A mood tracker you talk to has to understand your language. VitaMood transcribes and summarises check-ins in English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese (Brazil), Arabic, Russian, Chinese (Simplified), Polish, Ukrainian, Romanian, Turkish, Italian, Dutch, Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Slovak, Japanese, Serbian, Uzbek, Korean, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Hebrew and Swedish.
How VitaMood links mood and health data
With VitaMood Pro, the app reads up to 60 days of history from Apple Health or Health Connect when you subscribe, so the first insights do not have to wait for weeks of check-ins. It reads only the types you allow in your phone's Health settings. A type you decline is simply not shown.
Insights then build up as you check in:
- First launch: your mood and each health measure over 5, 10, 15 or 30 days, against the previous period.
- First check-in: what you said, next to that day's numbers against your own last 15 days.
- Day 4 onward: what your good days had. The app compares your sleep, steps and other measures on days above and below your middle mood.
- Day 8 onward: links between mood and a measure over the last 60 days, shown only when the link is clear, for example "Your mood averages 1.2 points higher after 7+ hours of sleep".
Every insight shows how many days it is based on. Same-day comparisons say what happened alongside your mood, never that one caused the other. Your raw health readings never leave your phone. To word an insight, the app sends only derived figures, such as a period's average mood, and they are not stored.
A daily mood tracker: making it a habit
A mood tracker only works if you keep using it. A few things help:
- Check in at the same time each day. VitaMood sends an evening reminder. The end of the day is when there is most to say.
- Say what happened, not only how you felt. "I slept badly and the meeting ran late" is more useful a month later than "tired".
- Give it two weeks. One entry tells you about one day. A pattern needs many days, which is why VitaMood waits until day 8 before it shows a link with your health data.
- Keep it short. A minute is enough. VitaMood stops recording at 60 seconds.
Privacy
The recording is saved and transcribed on your phone and is never uploaded. To write the summary, the app sends the transcript text and its language code to our server in Belgium, which passes it to Google's Gemini API. We do not store the transcript or the summary on our servers, and Google does not use them to improve its products. Your check-ins are kept on your phone and left out of phone backups. Health data is shown back to you only and is never used for advertising. The full details are in the Privacy Policy.
A wellness journal, not therapy
VitaMood helps you notice patterns in your mood and health data. It does not diagnose or treat any condition and it is not a substitute for a doctor or therapist. If you are in crisis, contact your local emergency number.
